  1. This class has helped me evaluate sports in many different ethical perspective and taught me how competition and fair sportsmanship work for all athletes. Open discussion and debate is an interesting way to investigate a particular aspect of sport and the issues that arise within it. The debates we had were interesting and helpful for gaining an insight on what is right and wrong. It suprises me how in depth and studied sports are from an ethical perspective and how sports development characteristics that transfer into everyday life. I have a better understanding and way of thinking about sport that i didnt have before and the knowledge to make right decisions when there is a crossroads. I have improved my critique and analysis skills through this class because you have to be open minded to all views on a subject and then agree or disagree with well thought out responses that can engage the entire class. While there wasn't much debate or controversy between opinions in class, it was good to hear what each of you think on certain subjects based on past sports you may have played and how competitive you may be. In the end, this was one of my favorite classes because it was such an open discussion class based format.

  2. In this class I learned that there are a lot more ethical issues in sports than I thought there were. I loved the discussion in this class because it helped to give me new perspectives and understanding of the ethical side of sports. This class also showed me that everyone has a different lens which they use to view ethical situations in a philosophical way, that also helped to analysis sports. I would definitely take another philosophy class if time and money weren't a barrier because I enjoy the thinking of ethical issues that are in sports and everyday life.

  3. I have really enjoyed this class because it has allowed me to open up to more perspectives on sports. I like to debate, as you could tell with my in class comments, and I like to push people's limits and that is what this class allowed me to do. I really enjoyed all of our in class debates and it helped me not be so "hard headed." Meaning it allowed me to think in different ways. I would like to take another philosophy class like this because I like the interaction in the class because it allows us to voice our own opinion, while at the same time take in other's opinions. This class has really strengthened my philosophical view on sports because it has shown me the views on sports other than from my football perspective. This probably was my favorite class that I have taken so far in my college career because of all the in class interaction and because I got to talk about sports the entire time!

  4. This was one of the favorite classes of the semester by far. I learned a lot of different things about the ethical side of sports that I never knew before. It was also very cool to look at athletics in a whole new perspective. What I really enjoyed most about this course was how it was an open discussion type course. Each class we talked about different ethical issues that were the hot topics in todays sports. It was also very cool to hear everyones different perspectives on all of the different topics we discussed. I am very happy that I took this philosophy course and would certainly not mind taking another one.

  5. I actually loved this course. I love talking about sports and having an open discussion classroom instead of sitting around and taking notes off of a powerpoint was really productive. I have learned so much about sports and different issues that come along with it. I am very confident with my knowledge in ethics and morality in sports after this class. Thank you for making it enjoyable to show up every morning.

  6. What have you learned in this course that surprised you? I was really surprised at the numerous ethical problems that occur in sports. I also never really took the time to sit down and think about the ethical issues that I knew were a problem in sports. It also really surprised me the different perspectives other people had on certain issues. I thought the class discussions surprised me in many ways--because so many different people had different opinions!

Would you take another course in philosophy if money/time weren't major barriers?  Yes! If there was another sports and ethics class, I would take it! The class on death and dying seems very interesting, too! Only problem is I've taken both of my requirements and taking another class would mean a later graduation :(

Do you have an understanding of the philosophical dimensions of the study and critique of sport? Yes! I really understood all the concepts and problems we discussed in this class!

Have you improved in your skills of analysis and critique, as well as in written and oral communication due to this course? I honestly this class has really improved my though processes. It also aided my written skills as well. I loved writing the papers! I also enjoyed reading the book and watching the movies. The only part I struggled with was oral communication. I have never been "forced" to participate in any class before, so this came as a shock to me. There were many times I wanted to make comments, but didn't because I'm stupid and freaked out. Once I got my self starting to talk at the end of the semester, though, I realized how much participating in class helps! It makes class and discussions much more enjoyable when you're involved! So thank you for highly encouraging participation :)

  7. I have loved this course throughout this semester. It took me a while to open up but once I did the discussion aspect of the class came easy. i would definitely take another course like this and i would recommend it to anyone who has interest in sports. I learned a lot about the ethical aspect of sports and how to view them from a different aspect rather than just entertainment that I take for granted. It was also good to have a type of argument with others and I liked hearing others point of view. I really enjoyed this course as a whole.

  8. This was a fun and mentally challenging course this semester which i really enjoyed. The ting that i learned that surprised me the most was how rampant of a problem corruption was in Universities, especially big D1 programs. I would definitely take another philosophy course, if it was about a good subject like sports and ethics. This class really helped me open my eyes to other peoples perspectives and that not every decision one can make is 100% right or wrong.

  9. I really enjoyed this class. At first I was a bit iffy on it, but as it went on it had gotten better. A thing that surprised me was a lot of stats that I never knew about when it came to the percentage of college athletes per sport, especially with hockey being the main one if I recalled correctly. At the moment I'm not sure if I'm taking another philosophy class, but if I do I'm not quite sure what it will be. I kind of already had the idea of sports itself, but it did greatly help me view it in a better aspect where I can look more in-depth of them. And for the last two questions, I still have the same feel for them in a positive manner and I know as I get older that they'll become more important to me.

  10. What have you learned in this course that surprised you?

when we first started this class I knew I would enjoy it because the main topic was sports, whats better than a whole class about sports and sports issues. I did not really have a clue on how philosophy was going to be relatable to anything in sports really but I was very surprised. It amazed me on how relatable the two things are. I never once would have thought about philosophy being relatable to sports until I took this class.

  11. Have you developed an appreciation for the relevance of metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical questions in our daily lives?

I have definitely developed an appreciation of the ethical question involved in our daily lives. The discussions we have had throughout the semester on how to look at one thing in many different ways and understand why someone would interpret something different from me has really been interesting. This class has definitely given me a knowledge on how not to jump to conclusions on a certain topic and look at something through different lenses like how we did in this class.

  12. In this class, I really did learn than I anticipated. I think that I learned the most from our class discussions, honestly. I loved seeing the different sides of view from people. Being able to put my view out there and listening to the comments on my view. I realized that there really are more ethical issues in the sports world that I was unaware of. But not only the sports world, I realized that the a lot of what we talked about was related back to the real world as well.

Some of the class discussions really led me to question what I believe. I changed my perspective on some topics, and I also solidified some of them as well.

I would definitely take another philosophy course. However, it would still have to be on a topic that I have an interest in, such as sports.

  13. I would for sure take another class like. I learned a lot in class from our class discussions. In this class i loved the fact that we saw all different sides of ethical issues and that everyone had the opportunity to express their own beliefs in this class. And i learned of all the ethical issues about sports that i would never have even thought about before this class.

  14. What have you learned in this course that surprised you?
I have never realized how ethics played into sports and how many different aspects of ethics there were. I felt surprised that you could think something was the correct thing but there could be something that would contradict what you thought was right. Also was surprised at all the lens and how you could look at each ethical issue.

Would you take another course in philosophy if money/time weren't major barriers?
Yes i would, i enjoyed this discussion type of class. Even tho i did not speak much, i liked to listen to everyones thoughts on current events and other situations. It made the class a lot more enjoyable.

Have you developed an appreciation for the relevance of metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical questions in our daily lives?
Yes, this class opened my eyes up to what was actually going on in our daily lives and made it easier to understand ethical issues in sports.

  15. One of the strongest ideas that I have taken away from this course involves a recognition of the complexity of ethical issues in sports. Prior to beginning this class, I was unsure of the nature of this class and how our discussions would unfold as a result of an unfounded assumption that sports are straightforward and do not lend themselves to such inquiry. The rules of many sports are often clearly organized and established and the winners of games are easily pronounced through reference to a scoreboard or deferment to a judge or panel of judges. Nevertheless, I readily realized that many issues—ranging from performance-enhancing drugs to gender issues to even simply developing a definition for competition—are complex and far from easily resolvable as I had previously assumed.

This course challenged me to adopt the perspectives of all individuals participating in and affected by sports and to recognize the ethical implications of the many aspects of athletics. One of the more challenging topics for me involved performance-enhancing drugs or equipment and the effects these have on the nature of competition, maintenance of respect for opponents, and the way standards change over time (i.e., it is not possible to compare statistics before and after introduction of such drugs and equipment).

In short, I felt that this class was an excellent opportunity to improve my abilities to write and express myself and to further my understanding of the many issues relating ethical considerations to sports and athletics.
