Sportsmanship & Fairness

What is sportsmanship?  What constitutes fairness in sports?  (Perhaps you could give examples of unsportsmanlike conduct if you can't think of how to adequately define sportsmanship).

  1. I think that sportsmanship is following the rules of the game, playing clean ,and respecting your opponent. Sportsmanship and fairness is about respecting the game you are playing and not breaking the rules, whether that be by cheating on the court or cheating in trainer, for example using enhancing substances. While it is easy to get caught up in the lime light and competitiveness of the game it is important to remember why people began playing it in the first place. I believe fairness in sports is about judging each team and giving each member the same opportunities. Everyone has the same chances to get into a gym and shoot but not every athlete has that desire, and that should be what separates the athletes, their desire to achieve not because they were handed something or because they were able to get a hold of performance enhancing substances. Over-all I believe that sportsmanship is about following the rules of the game and respecting the sport while fairness is allowing everyone the same opportunities while some athletes just take advantage of the opportunity more.

  2. Sportsmanship can be defined as fair play, having respect for your opponents, and playing the game clean such as using polite behavior and not being a "sore loser". Fairness in sports means that you follow the rules of that sport and don't take advantage of others or the game by cheating. It is very important for all athletes to teach and model what fair play is. Making sure that everyone on the team plays honerably and they are open to input from others especially coaches and mentors is also very important. Being evenhanded and reasonable in your decision making is also a big factor in fair play.

  3. I believe that sportsmanship is playing the game as clean and fairly as you can while looking out for others. The game isn't about beating the team to death but playing the game. To play a good fair game is where you play by the rules and codes of the game; this is sportsmanship. Being able to help the opponent up after you beaten them down.

  5. Sportsmanship entails following the set guidelines of rules, playing to your best ability, wanting the opponent to play to their best ability, being respectable and not saying morally wrong or doing morally wrong things on the field. Fairness in sports comprises not doing anything outside the guidelines of rules to get an advantage on your opponent. An example of sportsmanship: In football, a lineman blocks his man and takes him to the ground. Yelling and talking smack of what you did to him would be unsportsmanship like but helping him up would be good sportsmanship.

  6. Sportsmanship is the respecting your opponents.Being a good sport about losing a game is hard but it really shows you character when you can show sportsmanship towards other. Fairness in sports to me mean not cheating or doing anything that gives you an uneven chance at having a better chance to win the game.

  7. I believe that sportsmanship is following the rules of the game and respecting the other team as a whole. It also is playing morally correct. The game may be about winning but it is about how you win or how you lose that shows your sportsmanship. Being a sore loser or even a sore winner brings out the kind of person you truly are. Fairness in sports in my opinion is playing by the rules and not trying to bend or break the rules. No team should be given an edge in any game or else in my eyes that is cheating

  8. Sportsmanship in sports is how the players treat each other and the rules of the game. If a player has "good sportsmanship" they don't argue with the refs over every call, pick the other team's players off the ground when they fall, pick their teammates up when they make mistakes, and respect the game. "Bad sportsmanship" is when players argue with the refs over every call, bicker with teammates over mistakes made, cheap shot the other team when its unnecessary, cheat when no one is looking, etc.

  9. What I think sportsmanship is respiting your opponent and respecting the game that you love. Sportsmanship is something that a coach loves because if you have good sportsmanship you have a great chance of being a leader. A good leader has great sportsmanship and plays the game with great fairness. What I think fairness is is playing the game the way the game is supposes to be played, following the rules and not trying to trying to push the limits of the rules.

  10. Sportsmanship is respecting your opponent and the rules of the game. In football, that means playing within the bounds of the whistle and in a clean matter during that whistle to whistle period. Sometimes emotions get the best of everyone, I got a taunting penalty my freshman year against MSJ, which is horrible sportsmanship. Fairness is following the guidelines of the sports to create better competition. In high school, there are some teams in SWO that dont compete fairly. They recruit some of the kids in the area to come to their school, just for sports, to make them a better team. Anything like this is unfair.

  11. I think that sportsmanship is respecting yourself/ others and the rules of the game.Fairness is playing the way it should be played by following the rules and play as hard as you can. Unsportsmanlike like conduct would be not shaking your oppents hands after the game or trash talking.
